07 – Philipp Artus “Aquatics”
“Aquatics” is a generative underwater world in which animated sea creatures swim around and interact with each other. The artwork explores the emergence of life through abstract shapes and movement. The audience can design their own creatures by means of a tablet and add them to the virtual ecosystem. They can select the type and number of species; determine their size, shape, colour, and behaviour. “Aquatics” can be seen as both a utopia – an imagination of the unknown beauty of nature and a dystopia – and an algorithm to replace nature, offering a glimpse into how artificial ecosystems might replace real life in the future.
Philipp Artus is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Berlin. His artworks explore the manifestations of life through movement, sound, and imagery. He composes audiovisual experiences that unite playful elements with minimalist structures, timeless themes with contemporary observations, turbulent acceleration with contemplative silence. After graduating from the École des Beaux Arts in Nantes/France he went on studying animation, physics, and music theory autodactically and finished his postgraduate studies at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne.
